Mycoplasma Genitalium

What is Mycoplasma Genitalium?

Mycoplasma Genitalium is a parasitic sexually transmitted infection that occurs along with gonorrhoea and chlamydia. This parasite mostly spreads through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sexual activity and attaches itself to the genital tract in both men and women. It can affect anybody who is sexually active, but mostly affects individuals who have multiple sexual partners. In women, this infection can lead to bacterial vaginosis, while in men it causes non-gonococcal urethritis.

What are the symptoms?

The infection of Mycoplasma Genitalium rarely show any symptoms and this why it goes unnoticed for long time. Any symptoms, if they occur, are very general so people confuse them with other genital infections. If you are experiencing the symptoms of genital infections from a long time then you should consult your doctor immediately. The symptoms which can be observed in men are a burning sensation during urination and inflammation of the urethra, known as urethritis. The women can experience vaginal itching, pain during sex, burning or pain during urination.

What causes it?

Mycoplasma Genitalium is caused because of small mycoplasmal organisms which are transferred from one individual to another during an unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sexual act. These are extracellular parasites which attach themselves to the surface of the genital tract and start attacking the tissue host. If you have frequent sex with multiple partners then you are at higher risk of developing these infections.

Is it dangerous?

Since this bacterial infection does not show any symptoms for a long time, it often goes untreated for a number of months or even years. If this is not treated in its early stage, it can lead to many serious health complications. This untreated bacterial infection can cause prostatitis, also known as swelling of the testicles in men. In women, it can spread to the womb and ovaries, causing pelvic inflammatory disease, and can lead to cervicitis, urethritis, ectopic pregnancy and PID. The ultimate result would be infertility and long-term pelvic pain in both men and women. Men can also develop reactive arthritis as this infection also affects the immune system of the body.
