Genital Warts

What are Genital Warts?

Genital warts are one of the most commonly experienced STIs that have affected millions of sexually active adults. It is a condition in which you can see the appearance of skin mounds in the genital area both in the case of men and women. It is spread through one infected person to another because of unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sexual contact. It is caused by human papilloma virus type 6 and 11. Sometimes, it can also spread through skin to skin contact so one should be careful with this highly contagious infection.

What are the symptoms?

You can start witnessing the first sign of the infection between two to four weeks after the human papilloma virus has been passed on to your body. The early signs include the development of fleshy mounds on the surface of your skin in the genital area. The warts can differ in size, colour or texture. In women the warts appear inside the vagina or at the opening of the urinary tract, while in case of men it develops under the foreskin, urethra, scrotum or even in the glans of the sex organ. Sometimes you can also see the appearance of warts around the anus.

What causes the infection?

Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are different types of HPV, but genital warts are particularly caused by two viruses known as HPV-6 and HPV-11. These viruses are spread after having an unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex with an infected person. This infection can also spread through skin to skin contact. Hence, even if you use protection during sexual acts it can also occur with direct skin to skin contact of the genital area with the warts on the surface of the skin.
